January 1st: Polar Bear Swim

Want to start the year off with a splash? The Sunshine Coast Lions Club hosts an Annual Polar Bear Swim on January 1st. Starting in 2025, the swim is being held at the Trail Bay Pier in Sechelt.

Come and take the plunge into the chilly waters of the Salish Seat as a brave participant. Registration opens at 11am and the swim starts at 12pm. Or just watch and cheer on the swimmers.

Here’s a short video of the 2010 Polar Bear swim, which was held in Davis Bay.

A crowd of more than 100 people - on the beach and on the Davis Bay pier - watch as swimmers rush into the water. About a dozen swimmers are in the water already when the photo is taken, with others holding back. Volunteers from the Sunshine Coast Marine Rescue Society are on hand in a boat near the end of the pier.
